South of France, wondering through the fields, I stumbled across this disused old barn. Painting bare-feet on the grass, with no-one for miles around, heaven. I was in love with the environment more than the painting, and packed it away in my pochade box, thinking I’d come back the next day to fix it. When I pulled it out the box that evening, it got caught on the easel lid which scraped down the whole thing… which was actually just what it needed, some roughening up.
