Following the demonstrations sparked by the murder of George Floyd, NYC was hit with looting and street fires, literally on my block in Soho. I couldn’t sleep with all the sirens, loud bangs, and hovering helicopters. So I went outside and saw hundreds of youths running through the streets, pouring out of smashed up stores with bags of goods. I locked eyes with one for a moment and I thought, wow this guy is so young, healthy and seems like a handsome dude, why would he do this when he has so much going for him? It was a startling but sad moment, and for me reflects something deeply wrong with racial equality in the United States which makes such promising young people so desperate. I created the painting from the memory and some scattered reference photos.
